Students with reading difficulties are one of the largest groups of children receiving special education services in elementary schools. The core deficits underlying significant reading difficulties are often problems in dealing with the individual sounds in words and it is known that these core deficits frequently persist throughout adolescence and into adulthood.
The PHAST PACES research project has the following goal: The study will explore the effectiveness of a remedial program for high school students with severe problems in learning to read, spell and write. This program was developed specifically for high school students and young adults. This research project will examine whether teaching students a specific set of strategies and combining word reading, text reading, reading comprehension instruction, spelling and writing instruction improve overtime.
