Core French (Academic) FSF1DI

This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as social trends, technology, mystery, movies and the environment. Thematic readings which include a selection of short stories, articles, poems, and a short novel will serve as stepping stones to oral and written activities. Please Note: Students who are taking a majority of academic courses should take academic French.

Core French (Pre-AP) FSF1DP

This enrichment course in French emphasizes the analytical reading, writing, oral communication and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs and their daily lives. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes using francophone culture, technology and focusing on oral communication targeting the correct and effective use of spoken and written language.
COURSE NOTE: This course is recommended for students seeking enrichment and whose average exceeds the provincial average of 75%. Advanced Placement is for highly able learners looking to be challenged, who are passionate about learning, and who are self-motivated learners with strong communication, organization, and critical thinking skills.

Core French (Applied) FSF1PI

This course emphasizes the further development of oral communication, integrated with the development of reading and writing skills. Students will expand their ability to understand and speak French through conversations and presentations. They will also read a selection of short stories, articles, poems. Written work will include brief descriptions, letters, dialogues and invitations.

International Languages – Spanish Level 1 LWSAOI

This introductory course is designed to enable students to begin to develop competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the language of study. Students will participate in interactive activities in practical situations in which they can apply their language skills to communicate with native speakers of the language. They will explore aspects of culture in regions of the world where the language is spoken, including formal and informal forms of address, naming practices, family life and relationships, and celebrations.
COURSE NOTE: this course is not available to students who have already taken LWSBOI
This course is open to all grade levels.

Students will continue to develop their language knowledge and skills through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will also increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will continue to develop the skills necessary to become life-long language learners.

International Languages – Italian Level 1 LWIAOI

This course introduces students to the language elements they will need to begin to communciate in Italian. Studnts will participate in practical activities in which they can apply their knowledge and skills learning the vocabulary and language structures needed to communicate with a native speaker. They will explore aspects of the culture, including social customs, music, and food.
COURSE NOTE: This course does not take place of a grade 9 French credit.

International Languages – Spanish Level 2, Open LWSBOI

This course provides students with the language learning experiences that will enable them to communicate in Spanish.Students will develop and apply their speaking skills in a variety of contexts, and will participate in activities that will improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. They will explore the culture of countries where Spanish is spoken. They may take part in community sponsored events and activities involving both print and technological resources. the students will aquire vocabulary and language structures to begin to communicate with native speakers.
COURSE NOTE: this course is not available for students who have already completed LWS AOI. This course is open to all grade levels.

COURSE NOTE: A Pre-AP French student must be self-motivated, confident in the language and ready for new learning opportunities and challenges.

This course offers students opportunities to further develop competence and confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the language of study. Students will participate in interactive activities (e.g., discussions about literature, travel, shopping) in which they will further develop their knowledge of linguistic elements. They will continue to explore aspects of culture in regions of the world where the language is spoken, including fashion, historical figures, art, and architecture. Students will enhance their critical and creative thinking skills through reading diverse materials, including original literature, and will explore a variety of personal and professional contexts in which knowledge of the international language is required.
COURSE NOTE: Students wishing to take Level 3 Spanish without the prerequisite Spanish course must PLAR the grade 9 or 10 course. See your guidance counselor for assistance.

International Languages – Spanish Level 4, University LWSDUI

This course prepares students for postsecondary studies in the international language being studied. Students will continue to refine and enhance their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the language, with the goal of using these communication skills in a variety of personal, academic, and professional contexts. Using a wide variety of sources, including original texts in the language, students will consolidate their language skills as they use increasingly complex linguistic elements and language conventions. Students will also have opportunities to enrich their knowledge of aspects of culture in regions where the language is spoken, including issues related to popular culture, linguistic communities in Canada, literature, history, geography, and the arts.
COURSE NOTE: Students wishing to take the Level 4 Spanish course without the prerequisite Level 3, LWSCUI must PLAR the grade 11 course. Please see your guidance for assistance.

Core French (Advanced Placement) FSF4UP

This enrichment course in French, certified by the American Advancement Placement College Board, is a first year university equivalency course that focuses on oral communication through a variety of authentic learning activities. Students will study contemporary works of literature, will use technology to enhance their comprehension skills and take an in-depth look at francophone culture around the globe. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be greatly emphasized throughout the course.
