The focus of mathematics teaching and learning is to develop students’ abilities in Conceptual Understanding, Procedural Fluency and Strategic Thinking.
St. Mary’s offers multiple opportunities for math enrichment through our math team, contest writing, as well as AP-Prep and Advanced Placement course opportunities starting in grade 10.
Grade 9 Mathematics - Destreamed (MTH1WI)
This course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.
Grade 9 math is a compulsory credit required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Grade 9 Mathematics - Locally Developed (Essential) (MAT1LI)
This course provides students who have experienced difficulties in previous mathematics courses an opportunity obtain sufficient background and skill development to prepare them for Grade 11 and 12 Workplace Preparation courses. Whenever possible, ideas will be presented in a realistic context providing students with an opportunity to explore, organize, interpret, and use mathematical models to solve problems. Technology and manipulative materials will be used wherever appropriate.
Locally Developed courses are appropriate for students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) who have had their elementary math program modified. Your grade 8 teacher can help advise whether MAT1LI is the correct level to start grade 9.
Grade 9 math is a compulsory credit required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Future Courses:
- MAT2LI – Grade 10 locally developed math, MFM2PI, Grade 10 applied math, MPM2DI – Grade 10 academic math
- Advanced Placement Prep courses are available in grades 10 and 11, preparing for Advanced Placement Calculus and Vectors offered in grade 12
- St. Mary’s offers the full range of math programming to meet students needs now and in the future. For more information on math pathways visit www.wcdsb.ca/math
