Without the work of scientists, engineers and other skilled workers most new products, innovations and discoveries would never be developed.  Scientists study the natural world and try to deepen our understanding of how it works. They mostly concentrate in three areas: life, physics or social science.

St. Mary’s offers multiple opportunities for science enrichment, including AP-Prep and Advanced Placement course opportunities starting in grade 10.

Grade 9 Science - Destreamed (SNC1WI)

This course enables students to develop their understanding of concepts related to biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science, and to relate science to technology, society, and the environment. Throughout the course, students will develop and refine their STEM skills as they use scientific research, scientific experimentation, and engineering design processes to investigate concepts and apply their knowledge in situations that are relevant to their lives and communities. Students will continue to develop transferable skills as they become scientifically literate global citizens.

Grade 9 science is a compulsory credit required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Grade 9 Science - Locally Developed (Essential) (SNC1LI)

This is an introductory course in science that will allow you to learn about the basic concepts involved in biology, chemistry, physics and scientific inquiry. Each of these topics explore a range of topics including life-sustaining processes in simple and complex organisms, properties of common materials, electrical circuits and science in daily life. The course is designed to help you develop your mathematical and scientific process skills and to continue developing your skills in reading, writing and oral language through practical and relevant science activities. You will be asked to design and conduct investigations related to the 4 topics of study allowing you to put your practical problem solving abilities to use and to apply your knowledge of science to everyday situations. This course will provide you with considerable knowledge in science and prepare you for the next level of study and success in everyday life. If you wish to continue study science this course prepares you for the Grade 12 Workplace Preparation course.

Locally Developed courses are appropriate for students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) who have had their elementary science program modified.  Your grade 8 teacher can help advise whether SNC1LI is the correct level to start grade 9.

Grade 9 science is a compulsory credit required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
