Cell Phone Use in Schools

In accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s directives under Ontario Program Memorandum 128, we are implementing important changes in our schools aimed at fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.

These updates are designed to set clear expectations and provide the necessary guidance to help our students thrive academically and develop the discipline required for lifelong learning. We believe that these changes will better prepare our students for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Changes to Cell Phone Policy:

Starting September 2024, the use of cell phones and personal mobile devices will be restricted during the instructional day. This policy is part of our ongoing commitment to reduce distractions and promote better academic engagement and student well-being.

As educators, we have a duty to enforce these changes and ensure compliance with the Provincial Code of Conduct. We will be working closely with staff and students to implement these new guidelines effectively.

What This Means for Your Child

The use of personal mobile devices is only permitted during instructional time for educational purposes, as directed by the educator in the classroom, for health and medical purposes and/or to support special educational needs.

Restricted Access: Student access to social media platforms on school networks and devices will be limited as sites will be blocked by our networks.

Code of Conduct: Students will be required to refrain from using cell phones during the instructional day, except for:

  • Educational purposes, as permitted and directed by the educator
  • Health and medical purposes and outlined in their OSR or Plan of Care
  • Supporting special education needs, as documented in the student’s IEP

Elementary

Students in Grades K-8 in our elementary schools may not use mobile devices at school during the day without explicit direction of the educator.

Secondary:

Students may keep their device with them, but they must do all the following: turn it off- or set to silent mode and store it out of view (for example, in a bag).

Students in Grades 9 to 12 may use their phones during transitions, lunch, and spares.

Elevating Student Responsibility and Conduct

As we embrace the changes outlined in the Ontario Program Memorandum 128, we also want to clarify the expectations we have for our students. These expectations are designed to foster a respectful and attentive learning environment that aligns with our educational goals.

Student Expectations:

  • Active Engagement: Students are expected to be fully present and actively engaged in their learning activities. This means participating in discussions, completing assignments, and being attentive during lessons.
  • Respectful Use of Technology: When permitted for educational purposes, technology should be used responsibly and respectfully. This includes using devices for research, educational apps, and other teacher-directed activities.
  • Positive Digital Citizenship: Students should demonstrate positive digital citizenship by using social media and other online platforms in a manner that is respectful and appropriate for the school setting.
  • Supporting Peers: Encouraging a collaborative learning environment where students support each other’s learning journey is essential. This includes respecting the learning needs of peers and contributing to a positive classroom atmosphere.
  • Adherence to School Policies: Students are expected to understand and adhere to all school policies, including the updated cell phone and device usage policy. Compliance with these policies is crucial for maintaining a conducive learning environment.
