D8 Boys Hockey: MVP honours goes to SMH’s Evan Palubeski

On Friday, April 14, District 8 announced that Evan Palubeski from St. Mary’s High School was named the most valuable player in boys hockey.

Palubeski, a grade 12 forward, helped lead the Eagles to the top seed in the regular season with nine wins and one loss that came in a shootout. Through thirteen District 8 games in the 2022-23 season, Palubeski scored 15 goals and one shootout goal.

“When the team was asked for nominees for captaincy, several of the boys replied ‘isn’t it obvious’”, said St. Mary’s hockey coach Jon Symanyk. “Evan’s skill level was above and beyond as he scored goals and set up his teammates regularly. He even scored a goal during a close game versus St. Benedict when he set up behind the net and scored a ‘Michigan style’ goal. Evan also helped off the ice with game sheets and pregame speeches this past year.”

D8 Girls Volleyball: MVP honours goes to SMH’s Lauren Bannister

On Wednesday, April 13, District 8 announced its girls volleyball first and second team all-stars, which was headlined by Lauren Bannister who was named the league’s most valuable player.

Bannister led St. Mary’s to the District 8 championship final where they took the top seeded Resurrection Phoenix late into the fifth set before being edged out for gold. The grade 11 left side attacker was nearly unstoppable in the season when serving and attacking at the net.

“Lauren was the co-captain as a Grade 11 student in her second year playing senior volleyball,” said St. Mary’s coach Jeremy Farwell. “She is an outstanding athlete who also excels academically. Her dedication, positive attitude, and leadership helped to propel our team into the Championship game. She was named MVP because she was the strongest player on the court, both offensively and defensively in every match this season.”

Joining Bannister from St. Mary’s, is grade 12
