Oct. 28 – Incident at St. Mary’s HS – Communication to Community
Good afternoon, St. Mary’s Families –
As you may be aware, earlier today shots were fired on school grounds outside of St. Mary’s High School.
Police have since determined the weapon involved was a “starter’s pistol” and the blank cartridges were fired into the air.
Police believe this to be a targeted incident.
School staff immediately informed Waterloo Regional Police of the incident and the school was briefly placed in a school-initiated lockdown, before shifting to a hold and secure, which was then lifted at the direction of police.
We are thankful that there were no injuries, however, we understand this situation was traumatic.
Police have issued a description of the suspect.

Ventilation Report – October 2022
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board is committed to providing safe, modern, and efficient spaces for our students to learn and thrive. As part of this commitment, and with additional funding from the Ministry of Education, we were able to invest over $19,000,000 board-wide in improving the ventilation and air quality systems in our classrooms. Our team has installed upgraded filters to increase fresh air supply, added HEPA and/or UV air cleaners to all learning spaces and upgraded key HVAC systems to support healthy learning environments. These critical enhancements will help to protect our teachers, students, and support staff by reducing airborne pollutants and greatly improving indoor air quality.
